During my time at Northside Hospital, I have been able to shape my views of a career in the medical field. Unlike the traditional classroom setting, Northside has provided me with a unique learning experience in which I can shadow real-life medical professionals and understand the day-to-day functions of a hospital. I was able to observe what quality patient care looks like, such as helping patients to feel comfortable and assuring they are well-cared for. I gained the most from my experiences by asking my mentors many different questions and acting as a helping hand wherever I could. By assisting some of the nurses I was placed with, I was able to actively learn how to give quality patient care. As an important aspect of a career in the healthcare, being familiar with ways to provide quality care to patients will aid me as I prepare for a career in medicine.
My mentorship has prepared my for the future by allowing me to reflect on my aspirations and reassure me that a career in the medical field is a path that I want to pursue. My goals for a career in healthcare remain consistent, and have even made me more eager to begin my journey as soon as possible. Rotating through different specialties at Northside allowed me to narrow down which ones I am passionate and genuinely interested in working in. Additionally, I discovered that Nursing is a career choice that I am potentially interested in pursuing, which is an option that was not previously considering before mentoring. Shadowing at Northside has enabled me to further develop my passion for medicine as well as rule out professions within the medical field that I am not interested in. My view of the medical field has not changed since I began mentoring but I am able to say that hearing about all the hardwork and effort put into healthcare is much different than experiencing it firsthand. I was able to see the process and learn about the different steps nurses have to take which was extremely beneficial to me as a student. This experience has enabled me to become familiar with the hospital setting and learn more about specific details that go into the different tasks of workers. For a future student who wants to participate in this program, the best advice I can give is to ask many questions and engage with their mentors. Secondly, I recommend helping mentors in any way that they can because we learn best by actually doing which allows us to gain the most from our experience.

Northside Hospital Forsyth My research focuses on the different aspects of a career in the healthcare field that can affect a patient's quality of care. I discovered a variety of adverse working conditions in the medical field can lead to mental, emotional and physical strain from this type of work. In response, patients are deprived of the highest quality of care from their caretakers. My experiences in different specialties at Northside enabled me to see the prominence of this issue as it affects many healthcare professionals. I was able to learn about the repercussions of patient care being compromised such as recovery time and motivation to get well. My interview with Nurse Bik enlightened me as to how working conditions have been a perpetual concern in the field of medicine. Collectively, my findings make individuals aware and serve to promote change in the medical field as more and more patients and medical professionals suffer as a result of strenuous working conditions. Keywords: patient care, working conditions, strenuous conditions, medical field, concern I plan on preparing for my relevant presentation by going through my website and running through the information that I would like to share. I will decide which tabs I plan on presenting and making sure I have graphics rather than merely putting words up on the screen. Specifically, I will go through my home page and about me pages first to introduce myself and the program, using this time to lead into my research.
Kapinos KA, Fitzgerald P, Greer N, et al. (2012 January) The Effect of Working Conditions on Patient Care: A Systematic Review [Internet]. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0050184/
The primary purpose of this text was “to systematically review the evidence on the role of primary care providers’ workplace conditions in influencing patient outcomes,” (Fitzgerald). This type of research is imperative to the medical field in that it allows healthcare professionals to ensure that their patients are receiving the highest quality of care. Factors of a healthcare profession that could impact patient outcomes in the research included: the human resources aspect such as workload and training, physical environment, and healthcare provider outcomes such as job satisfaction. Various studies in multiple locations were researched for input from healthcare professionals regarding these factors. Additionally, patients from these studies were evaluated on their characteristics and outcomes. The research confirmed a positive correlation between higher workloads and lower quality of care, and found that other HR-related practices genuinely had no meaningful impact on patient outcome. Potential quotes that can be utilized from this source include specific evidence taken from studies that illustrate a correlation between certain factors of a job in healthcare and their ability to impact patient outcomes. In addition, quotes with specific evidence showing that improvement of working conditions benefited patient outcomes in studies could be included. The URL for this book excerpt indicates the research is credible as it has .edu at the end. Additionally, the research was published by the US National Library of Medicine which is the largest medical library in the world. The researchers used valid studies to support their research and ensured that these studies were unbiased in order to draw accurate conclusions. Although the source was written in 2012, the information referenced is still valuable such factors of a healthcare profession are consistent and their impact on patient care is still a topic of concern today. This source is valuable to my research in that it provides me with credible conclusions from studies that relate to my essential question. The excerpt is organized in such a way that it addresses all working conditions that could affect patients’ outcomes and has specific evidence to support a relationship between the two. Most recently, I have been developing survey questions for nurses on the Oncology floor to explore a relationship hygiene habits in the hospital environment and becoming ill. This survey pertains to my essential question in that I can research another aspect of a career in healthcare that can potentially create adversity when it comes to patient care. Additionally, I have conducted internet research and utilized the Galileo search engine to find academic journals and other studies that contribute to my essential question. I have also begun to construct a PowerPoint presentation for my Capstone, which is comprised of pictures and statistics to support my research.
LISOK, A., & NAUMAU, I. (2016). HYGIENIC ASSESSMENT OF THE WORKING CONDITIONS OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGICAL DOCTORS. Higher School's Pulse, 10(4), 3-7. doi:10.5604/20812021.1225359
The text analyzes a thorough study conducted on the working conditions of OB/GYNs and the way in which these factors affect these physicians. The author references specific risks to these types of physicians’ health, which conveys the importance of a healthy environment. One area of concern being described as, “the presence of extragenital pathologies in female obstetricians and gynecologists, arising as a result of contact with harmful occupational factors, contributes to abnormalities in the functioning of the female reproductive system during preparation for pregnancy…” (Lisok, 2016). New technology and procedures are referenced with regards to their implementation to make this specific field safer for both healthcare workers and patients. Potential quotes that can be utilized from this source include further discussion about other risks that have been shown to arise as a result of working in this field. In addition to health risks, there are significant quotes regarding the emotional and mental toll that a job in this field can have on workers which can also greatly impede the work of physicians and other healthcare professionals. The article is published on Galileo by “Higher School’s Pulse” which is a professional medical school in Poland. This academic journal is credible due to the experience of the medical students who wrote it, both with strong backgrounds in hygiene. These individuals have extensive knowledge in their fields and published this journal in partnership with their university who has done several studies on this topic. I plan on utilizing the specific types of risks for OB/GYNs described in order to expand on the importance of medical professionals’ working environment on their success. This information will enable me to expand my research from merely mental/emotional adversity in the medical field to legitimate physical health concerns that may arise. I will support my information by citing quotes directly from the source in my Capstone project. As an individual interested in a career in medicine, my research is primarily driven by my desire to be prepared for a job of this nature and be familiar with what to expect. As a competitive and demanding field, medical professionals face many challenges every day. I would like to learn more about such challenges and working conditions that I may face that could possibly affect my success and the quality of patient care I would give in the future as a physician.
Current Essential Question: What quality of care can I anticipate to provide patients with given the current demanding working conditions of medical professionals? As an added component of my Capstone Project, I envision using either a Brochure and/or informational website to share more about my experience interning at Northside Hospital. I could use these tools to support my essential question research as well as provide more insight into the routines of medical professionals I have shadowed. As my research applies to medical professionals in general, I feel that a survey could greatly aid me in generalizing my research to different types of medical professionals and compare the results within each category. Additionally, I felt that my interview was extremely insightful and helpful to my research and I plan to do more interviews with other mentors I shadow.
